These records, also known as the Grund- und Hypotheken-Acten, appear to have been started in 1787 and revised in 1835. Each village had a "Grundbuch" which kept track of the properties in that village. Each property was assigned a "Blatt" (page) even though the records for each property covered more than one page. Many of the Grundbücher for villages in the former West Prussia are still available in various Polish archives. For more detailed information see the records that have been transcribed by Adalbert Goertz for the villages of Gross Lubin http://www.mennonitegenealogy.com/prussia/grlubin.htm and Kommerau http://www.mennonitegenealogy.com/prussia/courts.htm .
During 2004 and 2005 I was able to obtain scans of the earlier Grundakten for several villages in the Elbing, Tiegenhof and Marienburg regions of West Prussia from the archives in Marlbork (formerly Marienburg) in Poland. Included here are scans of some of the original records for the village of Heubuden (Amt Marienburg). Since I was ordering these scans without the aid of a directory or index I had to choose villages where I could expect the maximum number of Mennonites per scan. In 1820, 202 out of 301 residents of Heubuden were Mennonites, hence this village had one of the highest proportion of Mennonite inhabitants in West Prussia.
These records provide genealogical information that is unavailable from other sources.
